AustraliaI want to access my super early due to severe financial hardship. What are the conditions?
You may access super early for severe financial hardship only if you're receiving Commonwealth income support payments for 26 consecutive weeks and cannot meet reasonable and immediate family living expenses.
What the Law Says
The Superannuation Industry (Supervision) Regulations 1994 set out the sole condition under which a person may access preserved superannuation benefits early on grounds of severe financial hardship.
To qualify, you must have received Commonwealth income support payments (such as JobSeeker Payment or Youth Allowance) continuously for at least 26 weeks, and be unable to meet reasonable and immediate family living expenses.
The regulation permits only one early release per 12-month period, and the amount released must be between $1,000 and $10,000 — no more than once per financial year.
Your super fund must be regulated by APRA (not an SMSF), and Centrelink must certify your eligibility before your fund can release the money.
Statutory TextA person who has reached preservation age but has not retired may request the trustee of a superannuation fund to release some or all of their superannuation benefits if the person satisfies the trustee that: (a) the person is experiencing severe financial hardship; and (b) the person has received Commonwealth income support payments for a continuous period of 26 weeks; and (c) the person is unable to meet reasonable and immediate family living expenses.

Statutory TextThe amount released must be: (a) not less than $1,000; and (b) not more than $10,000; and (c) paid only once in any 12-month period.

What to Do
Confirm you’ve received eligible Commonwealth income support payments (e.g., JobSeeker, Parenting Payment) for 26 consecutive weeks.
Contact Services Australia (Centrelink) to request a severe financial hardship determination — they’ll assess and issue formal certification.
Submit the Centrelink certification and your fund’s application form to your APRA-regulated super fund.
Wait for your fund to process the request — if approved, payment must be made within 5 business days.
Remember: You can only make one such request per 12-month period, and amounts are capped at $10,000.
