GermanyAm I entitled to a work reference certificate?
Yes, you are legally entitled to a written work reference certificate when your employment ends in Germany.
What the Law Says
German law guarantees every employee the right to a formal work reference certificate upon termination of employment. This is not optional — it’s a legal entitlement designed to support your future job search.
Under BGB § 630, when a permanent employment relationship ends, the employee has the right to demand a written work reference (Arbeitszeugnis) from the employer.
The basic certificate must confirm the existence and duration of the employment relationship. Upon request, the employer must also include details about your job duties, performance, and conduct — this is called the 'qualified' or 'detailed' reference (qualifiziertes Zeugnis).
The certificate may be issued electronically — but only if you explicitly consent. Otherwise, it must be provided in writing on paper with an original signature.
Note: If you’re an employee (not a self-employed contractor), additional rules in § 109 of the Gewerbeordnung (Trade Regulation Act) also apply — especially regarding content standards and fairness — though BGB § 630 establishes the core right to issuance.

What to Do
Request your work reference certificate in writing before or on your last working day.
Specify whether you want the basic certificate (duration only) or the qualified version (including performance and conduct).
If you receive an incomplete, inaccurate, or unfairly worded certificate, you can demand correction within a reasonable time — courts often require employers to revise it.
Keep a copy of your request and any correspondence — useful if enforcement becomes necessary.
