The Short Answer

For international travel from India, you need a valid Indian passport, a visa for the destination country (if required), and sometimes additional documents like return tickets, proof of accommodation, or vaccination certificates.

What the Law Says

The legal basis for international travel documentation from India is governed primarily by the Passports Act, 1967, which mandates possession of a valid passport for departure from India. The Act also empowers the government to impose conditions on issuance and use of passports.

Every Indian citizen must hold a valid passport issued under the Passports Act, 1967 to travel abroad. Without it, departure from India is prohibited.

Passports are typically valid for 10 years for adults and 5 years for minors. However, many countries require at least 6 months of passport validity remaining beyond your intended stay.

A visa — issued by the destination country — is usually mandatory unless covered by a visa exemption or e-Visa agreement. India has bilateral visa waiver arrangements with a few countries (e.g., Bhutan, Nepal), but most require advance visa approval.

Certain destinations mandate health documents — for example, proof of yellow fever vaccination if arriving from an endemic country.

What to Do

1

Apply for or renew your Indian passport via Passport Seva (online or Kendra) — allow 3–6 weeks.

2

Check visa requirements for your destination country on its official embassy website or India’s Ministry of External Affairs portal.

3

Apply for an e-Visa (if eligible) or submit a visa application with supporting documents (invitation letter, bank statements, return ticket, etc.).

4

Ensure your passport has at least 2 blank pages and 6 months’ validity remaining.

5

Carry certified copies of vaccination certificates (e.g., yellow fever, polio) if required; some countries mandate them for entry.
