The Short Answer

Yes, you can opt out of receiving marketing messages in Singapore under the Personal Data Protection Act 2012.

What the Law Says

The Personal Data Protection Act 2012 gives individuals the legal right to withdraw consent for receiving marketing messages at any time.

Under section 43 of the PDPA 2012, organisations must provide a simple and free way for individuals to opt out of receiving marketing communications — whether by email, SMS, phone call, or other electronic means.

Once you opt out, the organisation must stop sending marketing messages to you 'as soon as reasonably practicable', and no later than 10 business days after receiving your request.

This right applies even if you previously gave consent — you may withdraw it at any time without giving a reason.

Statutory Text

An individual may, at any time, withdraw his consent to the use or disclosure of his personal data for the purpose of direct marketing.

What to Do

1

Look for an 'unsubscribe' link, 'opt out' button, or reply instruction (e.g., 'STOP' for SMS) in the marketing message.

2

Send your opt-out request via the method specified — e.g., click the link, reply 'STOP', or email the contact provided.

3

Keep a record (e.g., screenshot or timestamped email) of your request.

4

If marketing continues after 10 business days, you may lodge a complaint with the Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC).
