SingaporeWhat is the drink driving limit in Singapore?
In Singapore, the legal blood alcohol limit for drivers is 35 micrograms of alcohol per 100 millilitres of breath, or 80 milligrams per 100 millilitres of blood.
What the Law Says
The Road Traffic Act sets strict legal limits for alcohol in a driver’s system and imposes severe penalties for exceeding them.
It is illegal to drive or attempt to drive a motor vehicle in Singapore if you have alcohol in your blood or breath above the prescribed legal limits. These limits apply to all drivers, including those with foreign or provisional licences.
The law treats exceeding either the breath or blood limit as an offence — you do not need to exceed both. The breath test is typically used first by police during roadside checks or at a police station.
Penalties increase sharply for repeat offences, and courts must disqualify offenders from driving for a minimum period — even for a first conviction.
Statutory TextNo person shall drive or attempt to drive a motor vehicle on a road if there is in his breath or blood a concentration of alcohol which exceeds the prescribed limit.
— Road Traffic Act, s. 67 — Driving or attempting to drive under the influence of alcohol
What to Do
If stopped for a breath test, cooperate fully — refusal is itself an offence punishable by up to 2 years’ imprisonment and a fine of up to S$5,000.
If charged, seek legal advice immediately — penalties include fines, jail time, and mandatory driving disqualification.
Remember: Even one standard drink may push you over the limit — the safest choice is zero alcohol before driving.
