US FederalAm I entitled to relocation assistance if a government project displaces me?
Yes, if you are displaced by a federal or federally assisted project, you are generally entitled to relocation assistance under the Uniform Relocation Assistance and Real Property Acquisition Policies Act (URA).
What the Law Says
The Uniform Relocation Assistance and Real Property Acquisition Policies Act of 1970 (URA) establishes minimum standards for relocation assistance when people are displaced by federal or federally assisted projects. It applies to all agencies carrying out projects funded in whole or part by federal funds.
The URA requires that displaced persons receive fair and consistent treatment, including financial assistance for moving expenses and replacement housing. Eligibility depends on whether your displacement is 'directly caused' by acquisition, rehabilitation, or demolition carried out for a federal or federally assisted project.
Relocation payments include reimbursement for moving costs, search-for-housing expenses, and, for homeowners and tenants, supplemental payments to help bridge the gap between old and new housing costs — up to $10,000 for moving and up to $22,500 for replacement housing (adjusted periodically).
You must receive written notice at least 30 days before you’re required to move, and you’re entitled to counseling and advisory services to help with relocation.
Statutory TextThe term 'displaced person' means any person who, on or after January 2, 1971, moves from real property, or moves his personal property from real property, as a direct result of acquisition, rehabilitation, or demolition of such real property, or as a direct result of the written order of a government official authorized to issue such an order pursuant to Federal or State statute, for the purpose of carrying out a program or project undertaken by a Federal agency or a State or local government with funds received from a Federal agency.

What to Do
Confirm your displacement was caused by a federal or federally funded project (e.g., highway construction, urban renewal, HUD-funded development).
Request written relocation assistance information and counseling from the agency responsible for the project.
Submit documentation of moving and housing costs within deadlines set by the agency (typically within 18 months of displacement).
Appeal in writing if your claim is denied — agencies must provide a written explanation and opportunity for review.
Contact your state’s URA coordinator or the Federal Highway Administration’s Office of Real Estate Services for help.
