IndiaWhat is the jurisdiction of the District Consumer Forum?
The District Consumer Forum in India has jurisdiction to entertain consumer complaints where the value of the goods or services and compensation claimed does not exceed ₹50 lakh.
What the Law Says
The jurisdiction of the District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (commonly called the District Consumer Forum) is defined under the Consumer Protection Act, 2019.
The District Forum can hear complaints where the value of the goods or services, along with the compensation claimed, does not exceed ₹50 lakh.
It has territorial jurisdiction over the area where the opposite party (e.g., seller or service provider) resides or carries on business, or where the cause of action arises — wholly or partly.
A complaint must generally be filed within two years from the date on which the cause of action arises, though the Forum may condone delay for sufficient reason.
The District Forum is the first tier of the three-tier consumer dispute redressal system under the CPA 2019.
