The Short Answer

Under the Consumer Rights Act 2022, you have the right to a repair, replacement, price reduction, or refund for a faulty product that does not conform to the contract within 30 days of purchase.

What the Law Says

The Consumer Rights Act 2022 sets out your legal rights when a product you buy is faulty, not as described, or not fit for purpose. It replaces older consumer laws and gives clear, enforceable remedies.

If a product you bought doesn’t conform to the contract — meaning it’s faulty, not fit for purpose, or doesn’t match its description — you’re entitled to remedies without delay.

You have a short-term right to reject the goods and get a full refund within 30 days of purchase or delivery. After that, you can ask for a repair or replacement first. If those fail or aren’t possible, you may still be entitled to a price reduction or final refund.

For the first 6 months after purchase, any fault is presumed to have existed at the time of sale — the trader must prove otherwise. The legal guarantee lasts for 2 years from delivery, during which you can claim for hidden faults.

All remedies — repair, replacement, price reduction or refund — must be provided free of charge and without significant inconvenience to you.

Statutory Text

A consumer has the right to reject goods and require the trader to repay the price paid where the goods do not conform to the contract and the consumer notifies the trader of the rejection within 30 days of the day on which the consumer took possession of the goods.

Consumer Rights Act 2022, s. 30 — Right to reject goods

What to Do

1

Contact the seller immediately — explain the fault and quote your right to reject under section 30 of the Consumer Rights Act 2022.

2

If within 30 days, request a full refund — no repair or replacement is required first.

3

If beyond 30 days but within 6 months, ask for a free repair or replacement — the seller must choose one unless one is impossible or disproportionate.

4

Keep proof of purchase (receipt, bank statement) and record all communication with the seller.

5

If the seller refuses your lawful request, contact the Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (CCPC) for help.
